Adding Short-run Label Production at SGIA
The number one challenge faced by visitors to our booth at SGIA was how to make short-run label projects profitable. Many guests in our booth were using large-format print/cut plotters to create labels for their customers. Some were using sheet-labels and printing them on their offset or litho presses. Although this application is not profitable, due to the manual process involved, shop operators do this to keep their customers from going elsewhere.
Short-run Label Solutions
Afinia Label’s solution is a either a combination of the Memjet-powered Afinia Label L801 Color Label Printer and the DLF-1100 Digital Label Finisher, or the DLP-2000 Digital Label Press.
For the first solution (L801 and DLF-1100 combination), the L801 is used to print labels on bulk label roll stock. Then, the roll is then transferred to the DLF-1100 for finishing (lamination, plotter die-cutting to any shape, weeding, slitting, and rewinding). After seeing this solution, a number of our booth visitors said, “This equipment is so compact and quiet, I could place it by our pre-press guy and have him run label projects while he’s waiting for large-format print jobs to rip.”
This solution’s price tag is under $40,000USD, which is a full $15,000 less than the nearest competitor. The included L801 software also keeps you apprised of the ink cost of each job, down to one-thousandth of a cent.
The DLP-2000 Digital Label Press is ideal for producing short runs of labels that have repetitive shapes. The DLP-2000 can create up to 7,400 labels (size4″ x 6″) per hour—printing, laminating, rotary die-cutting, weeding, slitting, and rewinding.
This all-in-one solution costs under $60,000USD.
